Before we went into Northampton, we popped over to Aldi at Kettering to buy tonight's dinner of cold meats and salad. Once this was done, we said goodbye to Sophie, who was working from home, and visted the retail park in town to look at fridges for the garage. We just wanted a small one to hold spare bottles, and we spotted two for about £100 so we'l'l look at getting one over the next couple of weeks.
It was a short drive to The Malt Shovel and we parked in Morrison's car park opposite. When we crossed the road to the llittle alley that leads to the entrance, the gate was locked... not a good sign as it's always open. I checked the opening times on my phone and confirmed that the pub opens at 11.30am during the week.
We walked around but as we neared the front entrance we realised it was well and truly shut up. There were obviously new opening times and the pub didn't open at midday until Friday. We were both disappointed as we'd been looking forward to spending a couple of ours having something to eat and drink in one of our favourite pubs.
We decided to see if The Lamplighter was open, but this was also closed. We left the town and headed back into the countryside and I suggested a pub we hadn't been to before (or if I had, it was ages ago), The Horseshoe at Sywell.
The fog and thick cloud of the morning had given way to hazy sunshine, and the view from the pub over the rolling fields was beautiful. We went into the quiet pub and ordered drinks before taking a seat and looking at the menu. Keith decided to have a mixed grill while I opted for the Turf and Surf.
We had a pleasant couple of hours in the pub. It was quiet, the food was acceptable (Keith didn't have an egg with his meal), but I'm not sure we'd go back in a hurry! The neighbouring villages of Sywell and Overstone have some massive houses but I'm not sure the residents visit the pub very much!
We returned home to relax and I have to confess to taking a nap!
