My blog is sounding very samey at the moment, and for that I apologise. It really is the hot topic (excuse the pun) here and in the UK, where there is also a red warning out for heat. Yes, it's summer, but these temperatures are far higher than they should be at this time of the year!
Today, it was set to be 42 °C here in Bergerac, and we could feel it was hotter than last week and even the weekend. The 22 °C we saw in the car last Monday is a distant memory! I know I may sound ungrateful, but the heat is preventing us from doing anything, and we're just lying low at the house, keeping to the shade and retreating back inside when it gets too much. The wooden decking around the pool is burning on our feet, so we have to put down towels to make a path! We're drinking bottles and bottles of water and wearing our hats constantly. Even taking out the rubbish is scorchio! I'm just so glad the car is parked in the shade of a couple of trees!
We have spent a lot of time in the water today, talking about previous holidays and planning the next ones! It was utter bliss to float about, gazing at the sky, which turns white-hot in the afternoon. We managed to rescue several little insects today who had got themselves into difficulties in the pool, and we witnessed a fight between two lizards. Such is our day!
We retreated inside at 3:00pm and started thinking about packing. I would say 90% of the clothes I brought with me haven't been worn, and the washing dries so quickly here that we have only worn a couple of pairs of knickers each! I had a long shower and then put the hoover around while Sophie packed the clothes we don't need. The thought of going home is starting to encroach on our lovely holiday! While I was pottering about, I managed to get the BBC news on YouTube and saw Keir Starmer's resignation speech. When Sophie and I were in Vienna, Wes Streeting resigned; now it's Sir Keir! Perhaps we should go away more often!
We played cards before dinner, which was lasagne. Not my favourite meal, but it was surprisingly better than I had expected! Our viewing choice this evening was another lovely film, It's Complicated, starring Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin.
After the film, we sat outside for a short while. It was 10:00pm and 29 °C... the bats were wheeling about and dipping into the pool as usual, and we could have sat outside for ages. However, the alarm is set for tomorrow morning... we're going out!
