Girls' Road Trip - Bergerac, France 12th-27th of June, 2026

The heatwave strikes!

Sophie was a little agitated this morning when she told me she'd seen what she thought were lights in the garden at midnight last night. I said it was probably due to a local party taking place on the solstice, and it may have been the headlights of cars leaving a nearby house. I told her off for not letting me know, as she was a little worried!

We spent today at the house, trying to keep cool as the temperatures climbed! Even first thing in the morning, it was hot, and it was bliss to sink into the pool and feel the lovely cool water against our skin. I was engrossed in a great book that I'd brought with me, and glad I decided to bring hardbacks, as sitting in the sun reading on my phone would not have been good! We leave our phones and my laptop in the house, where it's cool. We did bring Alexa out this morning and kept her in the shade, so at least we could listen to some music!

We did eat lunch by the pool, though - pizza for Sophie and a vegetable omelette for me. We are determined not to waste any food while we're here, but I think we both miss going out for lunch and exploring the area. By Wednesday, when we plan to go to the chateau, we'll be ready for a change of scene!

By 3pm again, we'd had enough, and I think Sophie was fed up with me for being a bit worried about the heat; she sits with her feet in the pool while I stay in the shade. We have a red warning now, which is serious! Years ago, when I went to Greece with Keith, I suffered from being too hot, and it made me feel ill, so I don't want the same thing to happen to her.

We did venture out to sit by the pool at about 5:00pm, but the heat was all-enveloping, like a hot fog all around us. It's hard to describe how hot it is, but the breeze here is like a hairdryer trained on us!

Sophie cooked beefburgers for dinner, and they were delicious. We ate inside and then watched the last episode of the Mormon documentary. Afterwards, we fancied something a bit lighthearted, so we watched Something's Gotta Give starring Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton. It was perfect!
