Holiday in L'Escala, Spain - 24th September - 8th October

Day 3 - An unwelcome noise!

I was up at 7.30am this morning and sat at an outside table catching up with writing the blog and sipping a black coffee! The Spar opened at 8am and when Keith woke up, we both showered and walked down to get some shopping.

One thing had concerned us and that was a constant buzzing from the big fridge freezer in the kitchen. At first, last night, we thought it was just cooling down, but the noise continued all night. The fridge freezer was very similar to the one we have at home, which is silent, so we had to contact Marion to let her know. When she replied she said that someone was due to come out to have a look at it.

In the Spar, we bought the usual suspects - milk, butter, ham, salad, fruit and a jar of instant coffee. There is a coffee machine in the villa, but it took little pods, and I wasn't sure which ones to buy. Keith bought beer and I chose a bottle of white wine from Catalunya and a cava. Then we stumbled upon these:

We decided to try the Negra Crianza at 2.90 euros a litre! After putting everything through and paying for it, we bought some bread and croissants at the bakery and trudged back to the villa.

Sophie was up and we had coffee and croissants outside. Two men arrived to paint the house next door, and a cacophony of dogs barking disturbed the peace, which was a bit annoying! The house is in a residential area, so it appeared that the dogs had been left outside while the owners went to work...

The morning was spent lazing by the pool, doing some washing and relaxing. In the afternoon the sun was lovely and hot, and we all sunbathed. Sophie did a yoga session by the pool and had a swim. The barking continued but it was bursts of yelping and screaming from two small dogs nearby. Not ideal, but there wasn't a lot we could do!

Towards the late afternoon, it clouded over, and Sophie said that rain was forecast for the evening. She also said that Thursday was going to be wet, so we might go to the Dali Museum in Figueres and have lunch out.

Nature's entertainment

We decided this evening to walk left and go along the seafront. A few places were closed but we found a lovely bar overlooking the sea and stopped for a drink.

Sophie and I enjoyed Sangria while Keith chose La Chouffe, a strong French beer. It was very relaxing sitting gazing out over the sea and the distant town of Roses, but the sky was looking particularly ominous!

It started to rain and then it came down harder and harder, so we were marooned in the bar! Overhead was a huge storm cloud so we had to sit it out for half an hour before we could go in search of something to eat.

Eventually, it stopped, and we were able to pay the bill and walk to the first restaurant as you emerge out onto the front, called Pizza Pazza, which was lovely and warm and busy with people eating and drinking.

The menu was extensive, and we chose chicken croquettes and bread to start. Keith spotted chicken fingers on the menu and chose them as a starter. Sophie and I opted for the escalope for our main courses, and Keith went for the grilled chicken. Keith drank beer while I chose a bottle of the house white, a Marques de Caceres Rioja to share with Sophie.

The starters were delicious, but we think Keith's was a children's meal as it came with chips! The main courses were fine, but we would all have loved some vegetables or salad as well! Other diners were tucking into the seafood paella so next time we might have that.

We managed desserts - flambeed pineapple for Sophie served with coconut ice cream and an orangey crepe for me, and also flambeed with Grand Marnier.

Outside we heard booms of thunder and heavy rain battered the windows. We also saw sheets of lightning but as we paid the bills (101 euros, very good value) it stopped, so we were able to splash our way home without getting wet!
